VITAMIN D

The information about vitamin D given here is in summary form. It is provided in an article by Ronald Kotulak in the Chicago Tribune of February 28, 2004 (Sunday).

The essence: People do not get enough vitamin D (Deficiency of vitamin D). This may lead to all manner and type of diseases. Among them are cancer and chronic fatigue.

One way of getting vitamin D is in the summer exposing oneself to sunrays at noon for about 15 minutes.

Another way is to take vitamin D supplements, different amounts for different ages. Daily allowance recommended:

Age 0-50, 200 iu, age 50-70, 400 iu, age 70 and over, 600 iu.

The iu refers to the number of units.

Excessive amounts of vitamin D are toxic, and hence may be harmful.

CANCER

A NEW DEVICE DETECTS CANCER

A new scanner called CT/PET can detect cancer cells after a patient eats sugar.

The scanner combines the feature of CT and PET and the combination of the two can detect cancer cells, which become brighter after the patient ingests sugar.

(The Chicago Tribune, Business, December 27, 2005)

In its issue of March 4, 2004, Investors Business Daily (IBD) reports on some of the new anti-cancer drugs which have recently been developed. The new drugs are reported to zero in on and destroy cancer cells while leaving regular non-cancer cells undamaged.

IBD reported on Avastin which is produced by Genenteck and has been cleared by the FDA for colon cancer. Another company, Genta, has produced a drug called Genasense, which aims at lung cancer cells. Information is also provided about other drugs that fight cancer cells without destroying non-cancer cells. However, the FDA has not approved them yet.

ANTI-CANCER DEVICES

A company called Varian produces radiation devices which kill cancer cells with sniper’s accuracy.

EXERCISE, DIET, 1

Based on many reports of studies I have read, I came to the conclusion that the most important action one can take to improve one’s health is twofold. (1) Exercise regularly. (2) Eat a healthy diet. This refers to healthy people who wish to stay healthy.

Of course, a doctor’s advice should always be sought as to when to start exercising, how much, and what diet is appropriate.

EXERCISE. In most cases, exercise improves the heart’s pumping function, and it causes muscles to use the oxygen we breathe more efficiently. Person’s lung as well as heart capacity, improve as a result of exercise.

DIET. Correct diet also contributes significantly to health. A better diet consists of two major components listed below as well as other components not listed below. However, we concentrate on the most important components. The first component consists of increasing the amount and number of fruits and vegetables in the diet. The second component consists of a negative. Do not ingest all manner and kind of animal fats, for example fat derived from beef and lamb. Thus, eating a juicy steak is a no no since it contains a great deal of unhealthy animal fat.

HYPERTENSION 1

The rate (measurement) of hypertension was shown in a study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JMAM) to decrease significantly after exercise was undertaken and diet was changed to include more fruits and vegetables and exclude animal fat.
